BIRDS AND FLOWERS

The legislature of each state has designated one bird species as the official "state bird" for that state. In most cases the bird species selected is indigenous to that state. A few very common birds are the "state birds" of more than one state. For example, the Cardinal, Western Meadowlark, and Mockingbird are each recognized as the state bird of several states. Others, like the Willow Ptarmigan of Alaska and the Hawaiian Goose of Hawaii are the state bird of a single state.

Each of the 50 states and several U.S. territories have also designated an official flower. Some are native to the state in which they are designated. Many are from other parts of the world and were chosen because of their beauty or importance, not because they represent the natural flora of the state.
