TIPPING ETIQUETTEbook
TIP BY PROFESSION

Tipping is a social custom, not a requirement, with no set rules. It is a personal decision, an expression of satisfaction on the quality of service you receive. It is a gift, usually in the form of money, given in return for services. The recommendation is to leave 10 to 15 percent of the pre-tax bill. In general:

Restaurant servers pay taxes on 8 to 10 percent of their total receipts, not the actual amount of tips they earn. If you don't tip them, they are actually losing money because they are paying taxes based on the amount of your meal. Larger parties (10 or more) most restaurants automatically includes a 15 percent tip in the bill.

The general rule is that you do not need to tip on tax. Most people just look at the bottom line (tax included) and tip on that. In most US states the tax is around 7 to 8 percent, so you double the tax for 10 percent. An easy way to figure 20 percent is to divide five into your check.
